The winner of the Bernie Benson Award 2021 was Daniel Gleghorn and the research team at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
For the 2021 Award, nominations were invited for anyone who has achieved outstanding progression in clinical viscosity. Individuals were able to nominate colleagues or anyone else they know who had championed clinical viscosity testing, its uses and benefits.
We received several worthy nominations but one stood out amongst them all. The work done by Daniel Gleghorn and the research team at Addenbrookes Hospital was the clear winner. They’d undertaken a study into the link between plasma viscosity and the progression of COVID-19 in patients admitted to the hospital with the virus.
The research demonstrated a sensitive and original use of plasma viscosity in the risk stratification of patients with COVID‐19 infection. This research could change the way we manage the pandemic and help to quickly categorize patients with suspected symptoms of COVID‐19 into high or low disease complication risk groups. The research was published in the International Journal of Laboratory Hematology.
Daniel was presented with his prize by Bernie and Julie Benson, directors of Benson Viscometers. He received it on behalf of the research team at Addenbrookes on Friday 9th with Anthony Browne, MP for South Cambridgeshire, and Cllr Mark Ashton, Deputy Mayor for Cambridge, along with his wife Barbara, all present.
